Philosophy and style

I specialize in creating unique, personalized residential landscapes that enrich the enjoyment of one's home.

I approach landscape design through these four points:

  • Design with inspired intent. A sense of theme can make a space unique. The intention of the design may stem from the client's vision, the site's potential, the designer's experience, or ideally, all three.
  • Solve functional problems.  Address drainage, soil retention, screening, traffic patterns, efficient use of space, etc.
  • Add dynamic elements.  Appropriately using dynamic elements such as line, form, texture, color, movement, light, plants, water, rock, and scent can make an area exciting.
  • Tie the design together with unity. This is the glue that bonds the elements of a landscape into a composition. Unity results from applying principles such as simplicity, repetition, focus, balance and scale.

A critical third party attending landscape-planning sessions is the budget. I can create a beautiful design on paper, but if it does not fit the budget it will remain on paper. Balancing the creative with the affordable is one solution. Phasing the project into affordable segments is another solution. Both of these options are the tools of good designers, and are as important as their eye for proportion.

I believe in landscaping in a sustainable manner and creating landscapes that help beautify the earth without harming it. I advocate sustainable practices such as using local materials, reducing chemical usage, composting, planting many trees, locating shade trees to reduce energy consumption, and using low maintenance, high performing plants.
